DIY Twine Snowmen

A twine snowman is a no-brainer. Simply take 3 varying sized balls and stack ‘em. But the “drawn” twine elements – pipes, hats, any details you desire, all are created by re-wrapping twine around wire, hiding it as an armature inside the strand.

You can then draw anything you want because the wire holds the shape. Write words, create a bow tie, a jaunty cap, and group a happy family on a credenza or a mantle. Create a centerpiece for a dining or buffet table, pairing the snowmen with items from our west elm collection to create a unique scene. Mixing naturals with glimmering metallics feels new to me and immediately propels twine into the holiday season.

Plastic bottles are an enormous contributor to landfill waste taking nearly 700 years just to begin decomposition. We posted some plastic bottle “fun facts” a few weeks ago that puts their rampant use in perspective, such as 80% of plastic bottles aren’t recycled. Well this little guy was upcycled from two typical 20oz soda bottles with some simple stitching of a zipper between two cut bottle bottoms. This could be a hip green change purse, make up kit, condom case, or a carrier for all your psychiatric medication! Some variations include cutting a bottle lengthwise to create a clutch purse. Along those lines you could find a two liter bottles and make a larger pocket book. A simple DIY and sure to spark some conversation.

Spring Garden Vase

Wash and dry all glass surfaces before painting with Folk Art Enamels.
Tape stripes as shown about 1 ½” apart. Paint stripes in alternating colors using Fresh Foliage, School Bus Yellow, and Calypso Sky. Several coats may be necessary, let paint dry completely between coats.
Remove tape.
Use large spouncer to make Azure Blue circles as shown. Let dry.
Using Wicker White, stencil single elements from stencils to decorate circles. Let dry and bake as instructed on bottle.

How to Make a Stenciled Retro Utensils Print

Screen printing is something that I’ve wanted to learn for years, and I’ve finally gotten up the nerve to take my first little steps. I wanted to start slowly, using a stencil and sponge to create my print, instead of jumping ahead immediately and burning screens and all of that.

In this project, I took my inspiration from retro prints and drew some fun retro utensils because I had my kitchen in mind when I came up with the project. I’m a huge fan of retro illustration, and I wanted to get the same grainy, sponge-y texture that I see so much in my favorite illustrators’ works. A small sea sponge was used to create this effect. The print came out so well that I just had to share it!
